I’d been drawing for the better part of 5 years or so before I decided to give it up, I still occasionally draw (once every few months or so), I still have the skill to do so, it’s just I can’t appreciate art as much as I do music.
To be honest, the only reason I started drawing in the first place is because people praised me on how good I was, when I got better people sort of just wanted more and more out of me - and when I did deliver people only looked for 30 seconds and nonchalantly said “well done” or something along those lines. Rarely did it evoke any kind of emotion from them. To me, painting and drawing is the lesser of arts compared to music. I don’t mean to sound elitist and say that drawing/painting is pointless, sure I had fun making art but I just didn’t get as much out of it.
Everyone can appreciate a good piece of music, likewise with a piece of art, yet rarely do people connect on an emotional level with a drawing or painting. To them it’s lines on paper, whereas people can formulate their own thoughts and listen to it subjectively. I think thats the crux of why I gave up, drawing just shows one thing (inb4 modern art is subjective, I don’t want to rant about the debacle of “modern” art). Drawing didn’t provide any sort of thing that people could connect to. I always felt like there was something missing from it, maybe I’m just being dramatic.
Perhaps its pointless taking something up just to receive praise or have a false sense of superiority over people who aren’t as good as you. By no means to I think I was the best, not by a long shot.
Now I’m a million miles away from being an artist, hell; I was almost going to go to Slade at one point, however I totally lost all interest in art when I started A2 art, I just saw it as manufactured pretentious garbage from a bunch of pseudo-intellectual armchair activist 18 year olds who fling paint at a canvas and call it art.
In AS art I scored 98%, an A, I don’t even know what my A2 score was, but I got a C, B as my final grade.
You can see some of my old art here if you want.
